Så er det (næsten) Jul!

Forsvar Immunforsvaret...

Jeg indrømmer det: jeg har været lidt af en læsehest i de sidste par uger, og denne gang har det været i forbindelse med at få den fulde forståelse af menneskets immunsystem, og den fordel som haves i det at man får behandling gennem massage.


Jo mere jeg har gået i dybden, dess mere har jeg forstået at der er en stor del af mennesker i vores samfund som os indenfor alternativ behandling måské ikke reklamerer til så meget som vi skulle; især er det vores allermest sårbare, som vi ikke snakker om, men som er blandt os: vores medmennesker som har fået prognosen om HIV/AIDS.


Jeg har ikke indset indtil nu, at i de sidste år som er gået, når man hører om HIV/AIDS, så er det, for det meste, kampagner som handler om at hjælpe dem som er ramt i Afrika, og med god grund: I følge Avert og deres rapport fra 2012, er der omkring 23.8 millioner (Midt-Østen inkluderet) personer ramt af denne sygdom. Det får det samlet tal af syge i Europa, som er vurderet til 900000 personer, til at se ud som intet...men, det er ligevel 900000 personer, og som inkluderer vores egne syge her i Danmark. Så, hvorfor er det at vi “glemmer” at danskere med HIV/AIDS eksisterer? Kan det være fordi levetiden samt livskvaliteten er gået op nu som der er medicin til at holde dette virus under kontrol? Men, hvad med angsten, frustrationen, den stigma som disse personer ligevel lever med, selv om deres fysiske tilstand er øget til et mere normalt niveau? Det er noget som skal gennemtænkes, ikke så meget tanke fra dig, den vanlige borger, men fra os ude i branchen, hvorfor der er massageterapeuter som bliver nervøse hvis temaet om HIV/AIDS kommer op, og derfor sikkert ikke kommer til at hænge “velkommen ind” på døren til dem som måské behøver det mest; også skoler som oplærer nye i branchen i det mest basale indenfor massage, nævner intet om “mindfulness” i forbindelse med syge kunder, så det er derfor ikke mærkelig at terapeuter føler sig utilpas i dette meget følesesmæssige område af kropsterapi, da der ikke er nogen særlig uddannelse i håndtering af særlige kunder.


Eftersom det er blevet sagt så kan det nævnes at om man har fået en dødsdom i form af sygdom, eller om man er relativ rask, så er det bevist at stress som påtages generelt kan nedsætte immunsystemet, hvilket jeg vil nævne at lige den angst, frustration samt stigma som denne gruppe af personer ramt med HIV/AIDS er alle stress-faktorer som nedsætter et immunsystem som allerede er under et konstant angreb; og det er lige derfor jeg har undersøgt hvad vi som terapeuter i alternativ behandling kan gøre for personer med HIV/AIDS: invitere dem ind i et inklusionsmilleau, hvor alle som behøver lidt alternativ medicin for stress og for at forbedre deres immunsystem er velkommen, idet at den medicin som er tilgængelig ikke dækker skade fra angst, frustration og stigma.

Dog det kliniske undersøgelse som jeg herved giver linket til er fra 1996, så er det bevis på at der er gavn i af få regelmæssig massage for personer ramt af HIV/AIDS:

Hvad dette forældet studie også fortæller os er hvor lidt videnskaben har gået fremad indenfor alternativ behandling i forbindelse med HIV/AIDS, det er som bolden er blevet droppet, og så trillet væk og derfor “glemt” at den måské skulle op i luften igen.

En anden sygdom hvilket der også er bevis at behandling gennem massage øger immunsystemet er dem i vores samfund som er ramt af kræft, eller som vi også kender under navnet cancer. Også disse individer, ligesom HIV/AIDS ramte, har et nedsat immunsystem grundet behandlinger som chemo og strålebehandling.

Også i dette område kan jeg konstatere at her i Danmark bliver der nervøsitet når det tales om massage og cancer i den samme sætning, særlig indenfor studier, hvor skoler lister kræft/cancer som en kontraindikation i forbindelse med massage, og som ikke giver meget tillid til den ordinær terapeut som ikke videreuddanner sig, at man faktisk KAN give behandling til cancer patienter, således at man har lært de rigtige teknikker.


Nu som jeg håber at have givet et lille overblik om hvad vi i branchen KAN gøre for syge og som nogle af os gerne VIL udføre for dem som er ramt af HIV/AIDS eller kræft, så er det nu op til dem som står den syge nær...det er dig som er en mor eller far; det er måské din søster eller din nevø, eller så er det din svoger eller simpelthen naboen som kan videregive den lille positive besked, at hvis livet med sygdom bliver for voldsomt, så skulle man prøve at slappe helt af med ikke-verbal kommunikation gennem massageterapi; og som vi står med julen (eller Hanukkah) lige foran døren, hvorfor ikke give den du kender som er syg gaven at modtage 1 times behandling fra kærlige men kyndige hænder som svinger immunsystemet tilbage op. Disse slags hænder kan du finde i næsten hver eneste klinik i Danmark...og sådan en behandling varmer krop og sind bedre end endnu et par uldstrømper, eller den vinterhat du så på tilbud...

I admit it: I have been quite a bookworm recently; this time, the focus has been on trying to gain a thorough comprehension of the human immune system, in conjunction with the benefit of being treated with massage therapy.

The further in depth I went regarding the topic at hand, the more I realized that there is a vast number of individuals, with serious illness, in our society [Denmark] whom the ones of us practicing alternative healthcare do not advertise our services to: I am speaking of the most vulnerable; the ones who may gain more from implementing alternative treatments, more than any others, in form of massage therapy, into the traditional medicine regiment: the individuals whom are HIV/AIDS positive.



It dawned on me, that in recent time, when HIV/AIDS is mentioned, it seems only in connection with the spread as well as containment of the disease in Africa, and for a good reason: According to Avert, and their report from 2012, there were in that year reported 23.8 million HIV/AIDS cases in Africa/Middle East, a number so massive that it makes the number of 900,000 individuals with HIV/AIDS in Europe seem like such an insignificant number. However, it is still 900,000 individuals, some of which are living among us here in Denmark. Why is it then that we seem to “forget” they exist? Is it due to the fact that we have available to the HIV/AIDS stricken, antiviral medications which enhances such an individual’s quality of life in the physical sense? But, what about the emotional issues which anti-viral medication cannot keep at bay, such as the anxiety, the frustration of having received this form of death sentence, in addition to now living with the continuing stigma of the virus? This is something which should be considered, as emotional stress, especially associated with physical illness, does have an effect on the immune system, as this factor, stress, can decrease the immune system’s ability to defend the human body; thus, it should be thoroughly considered, not as much by you, the ordinary citizen whom may read this, but as a cry out to all of us working in the realm of alternative medicine, using therapy in the non-verbal form, including massage therapy- shouldn’t it be given a thought why in this sector there are still therapists who become nervous when the issue of HIV/AIDS is brought up, and therefore, probably, are not the ones with a sign on their clinic door, stating: “treatment without discrimination” in order to attract the client whom may need their services the most; in addition to this observation, it may be added that the schools providing the fundamental education in alternative and complementary medicine should reconsider their curriculum, especially in Denmark, as it has been my experience that the topic of “mindful” treatment for individuals with serious illness is non-existent, and one can, therefore, certainly understand why some therapists become nervous regarding this rather emotionally sensitive area of therapy, as they have received no education pertaining to the handling of such scenarios.


With that being said, studies do attest to that fact that, whether one is pronounced incurable or happens to be a healthy individual- stress, no matter the level, has a negative impact on the human immune system, which is already constantly under attack; for the ones with HIV/AIDS and the previously mentioned extra emotional stress they need to carry about, can benefit from what massage therapists can offer, if such a therapist decides to reach out to this vulnerable group of individuals.

Furthermore, what this outdated case-study also informs us of, is the fact that science in this field seems not to have progressed; it is as if the field of science has not only dropped the ball on this particular field of study, but let the ball roll off so far out of sight, that it has been “forgotten”, and no one seems to figure out (or, worse yet, wanting)to get it back on the playing field again.

Another form of physical illness which there also has been provided evidence that massage therapy carries great benefit to the patient in our society, are those individuals stricken with cancer, as case-studies in this field also proves an increased ability of the immune system after massage therapy. Equal to those with HIV/AIDS, the cancer patients also experience a decreased immune system after chemotherapy, as well as during and after radiation therapy; also these patients deals with the immense stress factors such as the emotions of fear and anxiety, frustration and anger, as well as stigmatization.

Furthermore, I am quite confident to state that, when “cancer” and “massage therapy” is mentioned in the same sentence, in Denmark, it brings upon a certain level of nervousness, also; and again, the schools are to blame for the therapists’ apprehension, with regard to providing this particular group with holistic therapies, as “cancer” is listed in the curriculum as a contraindication. Ergo, it does not give a therapist, who may not have upgraded his/her knowledge, much confidence in offering treatment to anyone stricken with this disease, even though it is possible, as it has been proven beneficial to this type of client, provided that the proper techniques have been taught.

I have given you, the reader, a tiny speck of insight what we, in the alternative/complementary medicine, can offer individuals with serious illness, and which some of  us would be so happy to provide for those with HIV/AIDS or cancer; now, let’s reach out to the close family members and friends of the persons of these illnesses...a mother or a father, perhaps; a sister or even a nephew- or, may it be the brother-in-law, or someone less significant as the good neighbor: anyone who can relay the positive little message to someone suffering with illness: should life, while ill be too stressful to handle, then seek us out and receive the non-verbal therapy, which is for anyone with these illnesses a double-down winning strike, as it relieves stress AND enhances a worn-down immune system. As the time to be jolly is creeping near, whether such jolly time is Christmas or Hanukkah, why not consider giving someone close, whom is suffering from HIV/AIDS or cancer the gift of all gifts: one hour therapy from warm and competent healing hands, which are hands one can find in about any clinic in Denmark, as elsewhere in the world; afterall, such a gift will be remembered, and will warm the soul much more than a pair of socks or a winter hat from the sales rack...

Mens Sana in Corporo Sano...bogstavelig talt!






Vi snakker lige om rygning her på bloggen...og hvordan hænger det så sammen med massageterapi, spørger du så måske? Ja, det er jo lige det vi skal snakke om:


Det er ikke mit job som massageterapeut at fortælle dig som vanlig borger at du ikke skal ryge. Vi lever i et frit land, hvor man har lov til at gøre de ting som samfundet har tilladt os at gøre, inkluderet at ryge cigaretter. Hvis du er gammel nok til at lave den beslutning (hvad end grunden er) at, eventuelt, du vil se “cool” ud med en cigaret i munden, så er det jo din ret at gøre det, så længe du ved at du kommer måske til at se “cool” ud om ti år med et ansigt som har mere rynker end en bomuldsskjorte som er vasket på 90 grader uden skyldemiddel og som så har taget en køretur i tørretrumleren bagefter, hvis du forstår hvad jeg mener...så er der jo ingen af os som har lov til at fortælle dig at du ikke skal gøre det. Og som der er mange andre måder hvilket kroppen kan komme til skade på hver gang du tænder den lille stav, så er det din læge, sundhedsvæsenet, og de tusinder af journalister, aktivister, bloggere, og opinister på nettet som kan fortælle dig lige præcis hvad konsekvenserne er hvis man ryger!

Hvad jeg kan fortælle dig er at grunden til at man bliver for eksempel rynket hvis man ryger er fordi blodårene i de yderste hudlag bliver indsnævret grundet nikotinen, hvilket resulterer i mindre blodforsygning med ilt og næringsstoffer til huden. Men du behøver ikke at tro på mig...du kan jo læse om det her:






Hvad sker der med kroppen i det at massage haves? Er det ikke at blodcirkulation øges?
JO! Det er jo lige det som sker...og dermed øges chancen at man får mere næringsstoffer til huden, ergo huden får det som behøves for at forhindre forældet hud.

Endvidere, kan jeg fortælle dig at en kombination af dyre creme og rygning er altså ikke magi som kan bruges til se yngre ud efter mange år med rygning. Selv om at man holder op med at ryge sikkert er den bedste måde at holde ansigtet og kroppen ung, så er jeg én som holder debatten ved lige om at det stress man udsætter sig for i det man prøver at holde op med at ryge hvis man har været ryger i rigtig mange år, hjælper ikke til at holde balancen i sind og krop, og kan udsætte én for nedbrydelse(er) af anden art...igen, det handler om “Mens Sana in Corporo Sano”.

Rigelig med vand, et skift i madplanen hvilket betyder at mad som stimulerer kollagenproduktion i egen krop er indkluderet, fysisk bevægelse samt MASSAGE kan give dig bedre resultater end dyre creme, så måske man skal begynde med at investere sine penge i det overstående 3 (vand, mad, massage) før man investerer i små krukker med “magisk” rynke creme. We’re going to chat about cigarette smoking...and in which context, with regard to massage therapy, you may ask yourself? Well, that is what I am about to tell you about in this blog:

As a massage therapist, it isn’t my job to tell you, being the ordinary citizen of the society, that you shouldn’t smoke cigarettes. As most in the western world, we live in a free society where we are free to do what society has permitted us to do, and that includes the freedom to smoke cigarettes. If you are of legal age to make the decision that you might feel “cool” while a cigarette is hanging out of your mouth, then it is in your right to do so, as long as you know that you will look “cool” in the next decade,although with many more wrinkles in the face than are on a washed-out cotton shirt having just had the pleasure of being spun clean on the “whites” cycle, followed by a ride in the dryer...without the dryer sheet...if you get my drift. In other words, as long as you are becoming a cigarette smoker with your eyes open, then who are we to preach to you about exposing yourself to premature aging?
As there are so many other ways to damage the body as well by firing up the little nicotine stick, it is ,again, not my job to inform you of it; that job is left to your medical doctor, the Department of Health, as well as the the thousands of journalists, activists, bloggers and opinionists.

However, what I can tell you is this:

One of the reasons why wrinkles start to appear prematurely due to cigarette smoking is that the nicotine, once inhaled, causes the narrowing of the blood vessels in the outer layers of the skin, which may result in the lack of transport of oxygen as well as nutrients which combats ageing. And here comes my job as a massage therapist into place: What happens during massage? Hasn’t it been proven that massage improves the blood circulation? Why yes it has...hence, the increased flow of blood increases the ability for such blood to supply the body with the necessary oxygen as well as the nutrients, thereby aiding the body by such increased circulation to combat ageing...and facial wrinkles!


Furthermore, I am here to tell you that the combination of expensive facial cremes in fancy jars and cigarette smoking does not create magic which erases age, especially if the habit of smoking has consisted for years; even though breaking the habit most likely is the best way to preserve a youthful face and body, I would have to debate the fact that the mental stress for which a person may endure during the time of quitting cigarette smoking may damage the body and speed up the ageing process equal to that of smoking; Let’s remind ourselves that the key is to preserving our health is “Mens Sana in Corporo Sano”, or in English: a healthy mind in a healthy body.


If I should raise an opinion and advise a cigarette smoker how to address the
issue of premature ageing, I would advise to consume adequate amounts of water, and to implement into the diet foods which are proven to stimulate the body’s own production of collagen (which prevents wrinkling), increase the level of physical activity, and to implement into the schedule MASSAGE sessions! To invest in the above-mentioned change of life-style may give you a better result as opposed to investing in the retail “magic potions” A.K.A expensive facial cremes. Til og med de små gavner fra massage...

Så er en personlig hemmelighed (som faktisk ikke er så hemmelig til dem som står mig nær) lagt på bordet:
Jeg elsker alt som har med børn at gøre, fordi jeg elsker børn! Er der noget som kan bringe et smil til læben på en grå københavner hverdag, så er det at se et par små strålende øjne som kigger ud fra en barnevogn, og grinende viser sine bitte små tænder når blikket mødes med én af os ”gamle” som tager tid til at kigge hen mod vognen; er der noget som varmer hjertet mere end en vinterjakke, så er det at se en klynge af små mennesker som står og venter ivrig på bussen, mens børnehavepædagogen står og tæller nervøst om alle endnu er i klyngen. Derfor, da jeg så et opslag om kursus med hensyn til at lære hvordan man instruerer nye forældre i babymassage, så tænkte jeg ikke al for lang tid før jeg tilmeldte mig kurset, og bestilte billet til London, England.
For mig, anså jeg dette som den perfekte mulighed til at give forældre gaven at lære hvordan man tager tid til at skabe en solid tilknytning til sit barn, og skabe tiltro fra sit barn til sig selv, med håb at forældre modtager en anden form for gave som er at få den varme følelse i hjertet, når de giver deres barn roen gennem massage.
Babymassage har været noget som mange kulturer har implementeret i århundreder: I steder som India, nogle dele af det afrikanske kontinent, Malaysia og Sri Lanka har det i lang tid været tradition at give en nyfødt massage lige efter fødsel, i modsætning til de vestlige kulturer som ikke er al for udviklet i denne tankegang. Fordi vi her i den nordlige del af verden ikke er så udviklet i dette område er det derfor vigtig for mig at kunne starte kurser for forældre som er interesseret i at lære massageteknikken for babyer, men også for at lære dem hvorfor ”touch” er så utrolig vigtig for de små. For at kunne forstå lige hvor vigtig det er for børn at blive rørt på en sund måde giver jeg dig som læser dette en lille smagsprøve af vigtig og berømt forskning i dette område fra fortiden:
Endvidere, for os som har været forældre, vi ved hvordan det kan slide når små børn græder i lang tid. Dette er også en grund hvorfor det er vigtig for mig at forsyne nye forældre med teknikker som kan lindre smerte på grund af luft i maven, eller kolik før forældre må erfare timevis af babygræd, dermed nedsætter man også nye forældres stressniveau. Og her er en lille smagsprøve af de ting som det bliver snakket om i de fremtidige babymassagekurser:

The cat is out of the bag, as a personal secret (which really isn’t a secret to those close to me) is now laid out:
I love everything which has to do with children due to the fact that I absolutely adore children! If there is anything which can produce a smile on a grey Copenhagen day, it is meeting a set of iridescent eyes peeking out from beneath the shade of a baby stroller, showing off the tiny baby teeth while presenting a big grin to the “grown-ups” whom take the time to look toward the stroller and thus the child; only the sight of a cluster of little people waiting, with childish eagerness, for the bus to arrive, while the person in charge of the little daycare cluster nervously counts everyone, ensuring that all are still present, can warm my heart more than that of a winter coat. Because of the fact that all persons in tiny forms has a tendency to play with my heartstrings , it only made sense to book airline tickets to London, England…to attend the course in which the art of instructing parents, as well as other providers, how to perform infant massage.

To me, completing the “Certified Infant Massage Instructor” course and thereafter becoming a CIMI, presents a perfect opportunity to be able to give new parents the gift of learning how to take time to create the invaluable bond between parent/child, while forging trust to the parent by the child; and in return, creates a long lasting memory for the parent of the child of a time well spent, although past, now treasured, never forgotten.

While looking at the history of infant massage: Infant massage has been implemented into many cultures throughout centuries, in places such as India, in parts of the African continent, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, where is has been tradition to give the infant massage shortly after birth, quite contrary to cultures found in the western part of the world, where the mindset of providing newborns with such treatment has not progressed thus far. Due to this fact, I find it important to provide courses to parents whom are interested in learning the art of infant massage in order to change the mindset of “touch” with regard to parent/child, and to inform such parents of the importance “touch” is to the vitality of the infant/child. In order for you whom are reading this to comprehend exactly how important “touch” is for an infant/child, I am providing a link to an article from the past which briefly describes such importance, as well as mentioning important research (which is quite famous to those whom have studied this area of human development):

Furthermore, for those of us who have had the wonderful opportunity to be parents, know how tiring a situation of a crying can become when such crying continues for a long time. This is yet another reason for which I want to provide new parents with the 5-week infant massage course, as it provides an opportunity to teach such parents techniques which can provide relief to the infant in circumstances such as excessive gas in the abdomen, colic, etc., before the circumstance escalates to a situation of having a baby whom cries uncontrollably for hours due to pain, thus providing relief to new parents of potential excessive stress in an already new and stressful phase of one’s life such as parenthood. Sportsmassage...hvad er det?

Som nævnt i det sidste indlæg i denne blog, så er der en forskel mellem dybtgående/tværgående massage og sportsmassage. Og som vi allerede har afklaret hvad man kan forvente, med hensyn til en dybtgående/tværgående massage behandling, så er det på tide at kigge på hvad en sportsmassage er:
Man behøver altså ikke at være den danske version af David Beckham, heller ikke en skandinavisk protegé a la Mike Tyson for at logge ind og bestille tid til behandling i sportsmassage stil! Hvis man bruger en del af sin fritid antrækket i almindelig træningstøj og løbesko indenfor et fitnesscenter, spiller bold med de gamle drenge på lørdags formiddage, eller driver yoga med veninderne på aftensholdet, sandsynligheden er at man på et eller andet tidspunkt kommer til at overtræne en muskel/muskelgruppe, enten fordi et træningsprogram er blevet for anstrengende, og dermed resulterer i at en muskel/muskelgruppe er blevet overbelastet; eller, man har ændret sit træningsprogram og har nu introduceret en ny belastning til en svagere muskel/muskelgruppe.
Endvidere, så behøver det ikke en gang at være så voldsomt som overbelastning af muskel/muskelgruppe før man søger behandling gennem en sportsmassage; akronymet DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), eller hvad man måske på dansk kan kalde for forsinket muskelømhed” er grund nok til at bestille tid til at komme ind til behandling, eftersom det er bevist at massage kan reducere muskelsmerte som følger med DOMS.
Selv om en sportsmassage behandling også går i dybden, så skelner denne behandling fra dybtgående/tværgående massage fordi den som regel implementerer strækninger og afspænding med fokus på det specifikke område som er kommet til skade. For sport injuries specifically endured by amateur/professional athletes of extreme sports, the treatment alters as other combinations of techniques are used, which is not deemed relevant to the leisure athlete.
If we are to take a glance at the history of sports massage, it seems to develop later in history than deep tissue massage. As mentioned earlier, it is alleged that the ancient Greeks began the deep tissue treatments around 700-800 B.C (which makes sense; consider the sport performance mindedness which the Greeks of such time possessed; it should be noted that the first Olympic event was in 776 B.C)
