Sportsmassage...hvad er det?

Som nævnt i det sidste indlæg i denne blog, så er der en forskel mellem dybtgående/tværgående massage og sportsmassage. Og som vi allerede har afklaret hvad man kan forvente, med hensyn til en dybtgående/tværgående massage behandling, så er det på tide at kigge på hvad en sportsmassage er:
Man behøver altså ikke at være den danske version af David Beckham, heller ikke en skandinavisk protegé a la Mike Tyson for at logge ind og bestille tid til behandling i sportsmassage stil! Hvis man bruger en del af sin fritid antrækket i almindelig træningstøj og løbesko indenfor et fitnesscenter, spiller bold med de gamle drenge på lørdags formiddage, eller driver yoga med veninderne på aftensholdet, sandsynligheden er at man på et eller andet tidspunkt kommer til at overtræne en muskel/muskelgruppe, enten fordi et træningsprogram er blevet for anstrengende, og dermed resulterer i at en muskel/muskelgruppe er blevet overbelastet; eller, man har ændret sit træningsprogram og har nu introduceret en ny belastning til en svagere muskel/muskelgruppe.
Endvidere, så behøver det ikke en gang at være så voldsomt som overbelastning af muskel/muskelgruppe før man søger behandling gennem en sportsmassage; akronymet DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness), eller hvad man måske på dansk kan kalde for forsinket muskelømhed” er grund nok til at bestille tid til at komme ind til behandling, eftersom det er bevist at massage kan reducere muskelsmerte som følger med DOMS.
Selv om en sportsmassage behandling også går i dybden, så skelner denne behandling fra dybtgående/tværgående massage fordi den som regel implementerer strækninger og afspænding med fokus på det specifikke område som er kommet til skade. For sportsmassage som er specifik til atleter, rummer behandlingen også andre teknikombinationer som ikke er relevant til den almindelige fritidssportsdyrker…
Hvis vi lige kigger på historien om begyndelsen af sportsmassage, så ser det ud til at det var langt senere i fortiden at man finder bevis på sportsorienteret massage. Som tidligere nævnt, var der tanke at grækerne startet med dybtgående massage en gang tilbage ca. 800-700 B.C. (Det giver mening, da grækerne var forud med sportsorientering; den første OL begivenhed var 776 B.C)
Det var endnu en gang en græker som har fået sit navn i søgelyset århundreder efter hans eksistens, med hensyn til massage, og mere specifik, sportsmassage. Den græske læge, kirurg, og filosof, Aelius (Claudius) Galenus,(som var født enten i 129 AD eller 130 AD, alt efter om man tror på de amerikanske eller britiske artikler om Galenus) som var den designerede læge til Gladiatorerne, er i massageverdenen anerkendt som forfar til sportsmassage. Sports Massage...what is it?



As mentioned earlier, there is a difference between deep tissue massage and sports massage. As we already clarified in the previous blog what to expect from deep tissue massage, now is the time to take a look at what exactly sports massage is:
It isn’t necessary to be the Danish version of David Beckham, nor the Scandinavian protegé a la Mike Tyson in order to log in and schedule time for massage therapy, sports massage style, that is.
If part of your spare time is spent in work-out attire and running shoes inside the local fitness centre, whether you are dribbling the ball with the old boys on the nearby soccer field on Saturday late morning; or, if you are practicing yoga in the evenings with the girl friends, it is likely that you will, at one point or another, strain a muscle; better yet, strain a group of muscles, either because your work-out regime is too strenuous, thereby overloading such muscle/group f muscles; or, the training program has been altered and is now putting excessive strain unto a weaker muscle/ group of muscles.
Moreover, the situation does not have to be as drastic as the scenarios mentioned above before it is necessary to seek treatment through sports massage therapy; the acronym DOMS which stands for “Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness” is reason enough to be treated, as it is proven through medical research that massage therapy, herein sports massage therapies, decreases the sense of pain associated with DOMS.
Even though a sports massage treatment also focuses on the deeper tissues of the muscles it differs from deep tissue massage because it is usually combined with several stretching techniques which alleviate to various degrees the damaged area of interest. For sport injuries specifically endured by amateur/professional athletes of extreme sports, the treatment alters as other combinations of techniques are used, which is not deemed relevant to the leisure athlete.
If we are to take a glance at the history of sports massage, it seems to develop later in history than deep tissue massage. As mentioned earlier, it is alleged that the ancient Greeks began the deep tissue treatments around 700-800 B.C (which makes sense; consider the sport performance mindedness which the Greeks of such time possessed; it should be noted that the first Olympic event was in 776 B.C)
Once again, the limelight goes to a Greek when speaking of massage therapy, specifically sports massage therapy. The Greek medical doctor, surgeon, and philosopher, Aelius (Claudius) Galenus (whom was born either in the year of 129 AD or 130 AD, depending whether one believes the American or the British articles about the medical elite of his time),whom was no less than the designated physician for the Gladiators, is in the world of massage therapies acknowledged as the ancestor of sports massage. While scouring the internet looking for a great summary of this interesting person whom contributed so much to medical science, I found an article which I found to be quite entertaining (which, by the way, does not develop a sudden onset of the rolling of the eyes to the back of the head due to sheer boredom).

Lad os lige snakke om dybtgående massage...!


Der er tit og ofte misforståelser i den moderne massageverden med hensyn til dybptgående/tværgående massage og sportsmassage. Disse to teknikker ikke er den samme, og er konstrueret til forskellige formål. Jeg tænkte lige at det var en god idé at afklare denne misforståelse, og skriver hermed kort og klart hvad forskellen er; vi begynder med at kigge på den dybtgående/tværgående massage:
Man kan finde rigtige mange små fortællinger ude på internettet om historien bagved, og begyndelsen af dybtgående massage. Det siges at man kan spore teknikken helt tilbage til det gamle Grækenland (tidspunktet ca. 800 B.C), og endnu længere tilbage til gamle Egypten.
Men, det siges at det ikke var indtil den belgiske/canadiske kvinde, Therese C. Phrimmer, at den tværgående teknik blev officielt anerkendt.

Som ordene siger sig selv, er dybtgående/tværgående massage en teknik hvilket det søges ind i kroppens dybere muskulatur via massageterapeutens fingre, hænder, forarm, og/eller albue, hvorfor friktion, pres og/eller knibninger bruges til at løsne væv/muskelfibre som har sat sig fast, og har dermed skabt hvad vi så fornemt i massageverdenen referer til som ”myoser” samt adherencer. Ved at bruge denne teknik danner man frihed til mere blodcirkulation i området hvor myosen befinder sig, og kroppen kan nu frigive giftstoffer som har hobet sig op i området, hvilket betyder at muskelfibrene kan gå i gang med sin naturlige proces at reparere sig selv.
Selv om en dybtgående massage/tværgående massage behandling som regel betyder at behandlingen er mindre blid end, for eksempel, helsemassage, betyder dette dog ikke at smerten gennem behandlingen skal overskride kundens tolerance til smerte, da intet gavnes hvis behandlingen bliver for smertefuld. In the modern world of massage therapy there is often a misconception of such notion that deep tissue massage and sports massage are one and the same. Indeed, the two forms of massage are not the same, as they [the two forms of massage] are designed to serve different purposes. It seems, therefore, to be a good idea to clarify the difference between deep tissue massage as opposed to sports massage; let’s start with taking a look at what deep tissue really is:
The internet holds a tremendous amount of stories about the history of deep tissue massage. It is said that the practice of this form of massage can be traced back to ancient Greece (approximately 800 B.C), and even further back in history to ancient Egypt.
However, it wasn’t until the Belgian/Canadian woman, Therese C. Phrimmer, whom in the 1940’s decided to develop the technique which we recognize today as deep tissue massage.

As the definition of deep tissue massage is self-explanatory in itself, it is exactly as it sounds: it is a technique used to treat the deeper muscle tissues, whereas the massage therapist utilizes his/her fingers, palm of the hands, forearm(s) and/or elbow(s) in order to create friction, pressure and/or kneading for the sake of loosening connective tissue (scar tissue) and/or tangled muscle fibers which have become “stuck”, thereby developing what we (in the world of Physical/Massage Therapies) refer to so eloquently as adhesion, and/or trigger points. While using the techniques inherent of deep tissue massage, the massage therapist enables increased blood flow to the area(s) to which the adhesion and/or trigger points are found. The blood can now alleviate the body of built-up toxins in the area, followed by the enabling the body to start the natural process of repairing the damaged area.
Even though the deep tissue massage therapy treatment is less gentle than, for example, Swedish/classic massage therapy, it does not equate to the necessity of exceeding limit of the pain tolerance of the client during the treatment, as the treatment becomes counterproductive if the pain becomes too much to handle. It is therefore important to communicate with the massage therapist throughout the session of treatment regarding the level of pain for which one has reached.

Gode grunde til at slappe af med massage!


Der er mange gode grunde til at massage burde være en del af vores rutine andet end at kunne føle sig totalt afslappet under en behandling.
Ud af alle de forskellige massageteknikker som kan føre til afslapning, som nu er det flertallet ønsker at opnå gennem en behandling, så skulle man overveje at begynde med at få en ordinær helsemassage, eller som man internationalt kalder for Swedish Massage (man kan lige tilføje her at denne massageteknik hverken stammer fra Sverige, eller fra en svensk person), og som også er kendt under navnet, Classic Massage. 

Først og fremmest: På grund af den blide form for strygninger og gnidninger på overfladen, hvilket er den generelle teknik for ordinær helsemassage, bliver kroppens kredsløb stimuleret. Dette skaber en reaktion, hvilket betyder at kropsvæske, deriblandt lymfevæske, aktiveres, og affaldsstoffer udløses som nu kan frigives fra kroppen. Med andre ord, kroppen får en udrensning af stoffer som den ikke selv kunne tømme.
Endvidere er det konkluderet gennem forskning, at massage behandlinger stimulerer produktionen af kroppens hormon, Oxytocin.
Oxytocin har fået kælenavnet ”kærlighed” hormon fordi det er hormonet som er ansvarlig for vores evner til at skabe følelsesmæssige forbindelser med andre. Men, lige vigtig er det at dette hormon også viser sig at være med til at nedsætte stress, dermed føre til lavere blodtryk, regulere søvn, lindring af smerte, samt regulere kropsvægt.

Great reasons to relax through Massage Therapy!
There are several great reasons why massage therapy should be a regular part of our weekly routine, other than the fact that this form of treatment provides absolute relaxation.
From all the various forms of massage therapies which commonly lead to relaxation, which is usually why the majority seeks treatment of the sort, one should consider to start out with receiving an ordinary massage, also known to the world as Swedish Massage (even though the technique does not originate from Sweden; nor was it developed by a Swede), and also recognized by the name Classic Massage.
First and foremost it should be mentioned that, due to the gentle strokes and kneading of the superficial layers of the body during a Swedish/classic massage, the blood circulation thus increases, as well as an activation of the lymphatic fluids which leads to the detoxification process in the body.
Furthermore, it should be mentioned that it is proven through research that during such a massage the body increases its level of Oxytocin.
Oxytocin, which has acquired the nickname ”love hormone” due to the scientific fact that it is the hormone responsible for our our ability to feel and forge emotional connection with other living beings. But it is equally important to mention that this particular hormone has the ability to decrease other hormones which is linked to stress, thus relieving the sensation of stress, lower blood pressures, regulate imbalanced sleep patterns, relieve the sensation o pain, as well as regulate body weight.

Gaven som giver videre...


I København kan man få glæden at få massage utrolig mange steder. Men hvis du vælger at få behandling hos SANCTI, giver du dig selv gaven som bliver ved med at give videre. Og hvad betyder så det, mon tro?
Det betyder at vi tager 10DKK fra alle massagebehandlinger og donerer til 4 forskellige organisationer. Én organisation er designeret til én uge om måneden. Jeg har valgt fire organisationer som har inspireret mig ret meget gennem årene: To af dem, den danske organisation, KRÆFTENS BEKÆMPELSE og den amerikanske organisation, LIVESTRONG, hvilket er organisationer som samler penge til kræft; ONE.org, som kæmper mod ekstrem fattigdom, og sidst men ikke mindst: Medecins Sans Frontiers/Doctors Without Borders.
Vi kigger lige på hvem disse organisationer er og hvad det er de laver som er så utrolig vakkert:


KRÆFTENS BEKÆMPELSE
Kræftens Bekæmpelse begyndte sin rejse gennem tiden i 1904. Organisationen var grundlagt af danske læger, og kan den dag i dag betragtes som den største sygdomsbekæmpende organisation i Danmark.
Denne organisation har 3 formål:
1.Forskning
2.Forebyggelse/bekæmpelse
3.Rådgivning til patienter med kræft og deres pårørende

LIVESTRONG
Livestrong.org var tidligere anerkendt som Lance Armstrong Foundation, og var grundlagt af cyklisten Lance Armstrong, som selv også har været ramt af kræft. Hovedkvarteret befinder sig i Austin, Texas.
Denne organisation har som hovedformål at støtte kræftpatienter gennem deres mange programmer og projekter.
ONE.org
Denne utrolige organisation som har ingen anden end Bono som talsmand, var faktisk dannet af en koalition som repræsenterede 11 NGOer, deriblandt OXFAM og World Vision; bevillingen til at grundlægge organisationen kom fra Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Selv om ONE.org har som hovedformål at bekæmpe ekstrem fattigdom, er denne organisation engageret i mange andre projekter som for eksempel at forsyne rent vand, bekæmpelse af AIDS, og bekæmpelse af korruption med hensyn til kapital i lande som befindes primært i den tredje verden.

MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERS
MSF er oprindelig en fransk organisation som har spredt sig til alle hjørner af verden, og vi kender den i Danmark som Læger Uden Grænser.
Den var grundlagt af Bernard Kouchner i 1971. Som navnet siger sig selv, så er det læger samt al støttepersonale som udover alle verdens grænser hjælper til i de mest katastrofe/konfliktramte områder.

I Copenhagen, the availability to enjoy the pleasure of massage therapy is everywhere. However, should you chose to come to SANCTI in order to be treated, you will be giving yourself the gift which keeps on giving. So, what does that mean?
It means that, for every massage performed at SANCTI, 10DKK of the proceeds is donated to four organizations of our choice. An organization is dedicated for one particular week of the month. I have chosen to donate the proceeds to four non-profit organizations which have inspired me tremendously throught the years. Two of the non-profit organizations which have the primary mission providing aid to cancer research as well as cancer patients as well as cancer survivors, are the Danish non-profit organization Kræftens Bekæmpelse and the American non-profit organization, LIVESTRONG; ONE.org, which fights extreme poverty, and last but not least, Medicins Sans Frontiers.

Let’s take a look at these four non-profit organizations and what it is they [the organizations] which makes their tireless efforts so beautifully inspiring:
KRÆFTENS BEKÆMPELSE:
Kræftens Bekæmpelse began its journey throughout time in the year of 1904. The non-profit organization was founded by Danish medical doctors, and is today considered the largest preventive madical care organization in Denmark.
The organization has 3 primary mission goals:
1.Cancer research
2.Cancer prevention/Cancer medical care
3.Counseling and support to cancer patients as well as their families

LIVESTRONG:
Livestrong.org, which is formerly known under the name Lance Armstrong Foundation, was founded by the internationally recognized elite cyclist, and cancer survivor, Lance Armstrong. The headquarters of the organization is located in Austin, Texas.
The mission of this organization is to provide cancer patients as well as cancer survivors though their many powerful programs and projects.
ONE.org:
This incredible non-profit organization, which have no other than BONO as its ambassador, was originally created through a coalition 11 non-profit organizations, including OXFAM and World Vision; the capital for which the foundation needed in order to be founded derived from The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Although ONE.org has as their primary mission to fight extreme poverty, the organization also engages in many other projects such as ensuring and providing clean water, AIDS prevention, and fighting against the corruption primarily found in the third-world countries, with regard to the embezzling of funds intended for the most vulnerable members of such societies.


MEDICINS SANS FRONTIERS:
Medicins Sans Frontiers was originally a French non-profit organization which has now spread to every corner of the world, and the organization is in Denmark recognized under the name: Læger Uden Grænser.

MFS was founded in the year of 1971 by Bernard Kouchner. As the name clearly states, doctors as well as support staff cross borders into the most conflict stricken areas of the world in order to fulfill their mission of providing critical medical care.
